At the end of January I vowed to do a monthly roundup of some of the things I had done, so that when my brain throws me into the depths of despair due to my lack of writing progress I can point to something tangible explaining why I am not a total failure. Here is the February edition.
This month I’ve read 6 books, bringing the yearly total up to 14.
None of them were by men, all 6 were by women. 5 were fiction, 1 non fiction. 3 were by writers of colour, 3 by caucasian authors. Although I’m arguably still doing OK on the reading more widely than in 2017 front, there was a definite swerve into SF here. As in January, there’s a full list at the bottom of the post if you’re interested/would like to swap notes.
I started trying to free-write in an old diary from 2013 (which I originally stopped updating in March that year). I got a copy of Gutter magazine in the post which contains a book review I wrote – not quite the same as getting my fiction in there but I’m still pleased.
I’ve written three blog posts including this one, and one featuring a bit of
navel-gazing soul searching on whether to give up on a manuscript I’ve been working on. I missed a week, but still on track to do better than last year.
I began three short stories and finished none. That’s a pretty paltry 1,155 words of fiction, and I neglected to do any submissions. But it’s more than none, I suppose.
I’ve taken a rotten, spider infested shed to a tip with the help of my sister and brother-in-law. I’ve made pancakes and seen snowdrops. I’ve met a tiny baby and planned a 900 mile round trip to meet another.
I’ve had the fright of my life when the cat decided to climb me like a tree whilst my back was turned. I’ve introduced him to some new people, much to his chagrin.
I’ve seen Black Panther. I’ve decided to paint the bedroom green, or part of it at least, after a lengthy and ultimately fruitless quest for nice wallpaper. I’ve contemplated completing a writing bootcamp podcast by Tim Clare.
