What do Jedward’s Birthday, Liam Fox, Justin Bieber, Siri, We Are the 99 Percent, the Rugby World Cup, protests in London and the Korean Grand Prix have in common?

They’re all featured as keywords in this blog post, because they are the things people seem to be talking about on Twitter today and I want to see whether mentioning them drives more traffic to this page.

I don’t have a lot to say about any of them though, sadly.  So what I might do is incorporate them all into a short horror story, as this month I’ve been claiming I can write a short story every single day (turns out I can’t – it’s really quite hard).

 

It was John and Edward’s birthday, and they were celebrating by dancing around their kitchen to the new Justin Bieber album.

The Great Kindle Challenge: Day 10

A couple of days ago I was linked to an article in The Economist suggesting that soon people will stop using shelves for books and adorn them exclusively with knick knacks, much like that old lady you used to know who kept a faux-mahogany sitting room for special occasions (like drinking chintz out of the posh tea set).  The blame for this lies squarely at the feet of ePublishing and the kindle and will lead to seven plagues and the death of literacy.  Or something.

The article touches on the matter of eBook piracy, which is a very touchy subject and is often tagged onto the End of Publishing debate without much explanation.  I’ve read articles by a few authors saying it is A Very Bad Thing, and still more articles by different authors saying that actually it can raise your profile and boost sales.  A summary googling of the topic came up with piracy articles dating back over several years, which I shall now bullet point for your indifference: Continue reading “The Great Kindle Challenge: Day 10” →

The Great Kindle Challenge: Day 5

Yesterday’s list of reasons to hate the kindle got quite a lot of hits for comparatively little publicity, which is interesting.  Presumably it reflects the mood of the internet at present.  However, in the interests of impartiality (I still haven’t come down on either side of the fence) today I feel I probably ought to post some reasons why you should buy the kindle and love it more than your own children.  This inclination is one of the trials and tribulations of being a revisionist historian/journalist – one must always look at both sides of the fictitious coin.  Here goes.  Continue reading “The Great Kindle Challenge: Day 5” →
